ASEAN Tallest Building, Exchange 106 in Malaysia Chooses Supratec MicroClear® MBR to Meet Green Building (GBI) Gold Certification

Challenge

The Exchange 106 is the tallest building in Malaysia as well as South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), with a height of 492 metres. With a height equivalence of 112 floors, this modern icon nestled within the prestige Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) area, comprises 106 floors of expansive column-free floorplates inclusive of 8 amenity floors and 6 basements. The tower have a net lettable area of 240,000 square metres and is benchmarked against similar buildings in large international financial centers, such as London’s Canary Wharf and The Shard, New York’s Freedom Tower, and Shanghai IFC.

Designed to the highest specifications it is environmentally sustainable and certified under the Green Building Index (GBI) Gold Certification as well as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Water reuse is one of the key criteria to help the tower Owner meeting GBI Gold Certification. As such, the project proponent decided to choose MBR technology coupled with RO for water reuse in its own tower cooling system as well as make up water for toilet flushing and irrigation.

Solution

OCNED Sdn Bhd won the competitive bid for the construction of the MBR system in the tower basement, utilising MicroClear® MBR technology. Ultimate design capacity for the MicroClear® MBR system is 1,500 m3/d, with a current design capacity of 1,000 m3/d, with domestic wastewater constituents only.

The treatment train consists of odour removal, coarse screen, grit removal, oil and grease removal, 2mm rotary fine screen, EQ, anoxic, aerobic, MBR trains and aerobic sludge digester. All major equipment and biological process tanks, except the MBR, are designed for the ultimate design capacity of 1,500 m3d. There are two (2) MBR trains, with each train populates to handle current design capacity of 1,000 m3/d, with an allowance for additional membrane modules installed for the ultimate design capacity of 1,500 m3/d. MBR effluent is being sent to an effluent storage tank where it will be pumped to a RO system for final treatment before reuse.

Results

The Exchange 106 manages to meet GBI Gold Certification with water reuse feature using Supratec MicroClear® MBR technology and RO technology.

Indonesia Industrial Wastewater Park Reuse 85% Effluent with Supratec MicroClear® MBR

Challenge
One industrial wastewater park in Indonesia is building a centralized wastewater treatment plant to treat wastewater from various industrial factories in the industrial zone. Due to fresh water source restriction and stringent effluent discharge standards, MBR was chosen to be the preferred technology. One of the design objectives is to reuse up to 85% MBR effluent for downstream RO treatment to generate potable water and augment fresh water supply for the factories in the industrial park.
Solution
A local Contractor was engaged as the main contractor for the MBR treatment plant. Supratec MicroClear® MBR was chosen as the Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane supplier utilising flat sheet membranes for the MBR plant. Construction of the MBR plant is carried out in 2 phases, with each phase catered for 2,500 m3/d. Phase 1 was started in 2018 and completed in 2019. Phase 2 will be built in the future when the plant exceeds its capacity. The treatment process consists of two Supratec MicroClear® MBR trains with 6 x MB4-4 modules in each train, so a total of 12 x MB4-4 modules.
Results
The plant was successfully built over 9-month period, making it the one of the largest industrial MBR plants in Indonesia. The plant has managed to reduce the fresh water supply to the industrial park by reusing up to 85% effluent from the MBR plant. Effluent from the plant also meets stringent effluent discharge standards set by Indonesia government, which in turn has reduced the impact on the local marine ecosystem.

Supratec MicroClear® MBR Helps Textile Plant Owner Increased Plant Capacity by 250% and Meet Indonesia Direct Surface Water Discharge Standards

Challenge
A global garment supplier for the apparel industry, owned and operated a large manufacturing facility in Tangerang, Indonesia. The production plant is slated to increase its manufacturing capacity significantly to fulfil an increased demand of his garment products within a six-month window. As a result of this rapid expansion, the Management is seeking to upgrade its existing activated sludge process plant (with chemical pre-treatment) capacity by 250% to meet Indonesia Direct Surface Water Discharge Guidelines. The existing activated sludge plant (with chemical pre-treatment) is already reaching its maximum capacity and has a very limited footprint to accommodate the rapid expansion. The Management decided to choose an MBR process to treat an increased flow of 700 m3/d with the following design loadings.

Solution
PT Tirtakreasi Amrita was engaged for the MBR upgrade project. The existing treatment system consists of a pre-sedimentation tank and flocculation/coagulation tank with chemicals addition as a pre-treatment to degrade the colour in textile wastewater and solubilize the wastewater for downstream biological process. The Contractor increased air capacity of the aerobic reactor, installed four (4) units of Supratec MicroClear® MB3-4 modules into the existing two clarifiers (converted into two MBR trains), and added recycle pumps, all within the existing limited plant footprint. Sodium hypochlorite is added into the MBR effluent to reduce the effluent colours to meet Indonesia Direct Surface Water Discharge Standards.
Results
The plant upgrade successfully increased the plant treatment plant capacity by 250% and meets Indonesia Direct Surface Water Discharge Standards, within the six-month time frame using existing limited plant footprint.

Philippines Largest Fast Food Chain Selects Supratec MicroClear® MBR to Solve Their Wastewater Discharge Issues

Challenge

The largest fast food chain in the Philippines with an estimated market capital of US$4.8 billion, owns over 1,150 stores nationwide and 3,000 stores globally. A dominant market leader in the Philippines, this F&B company enjoys the lion’s share of the local market that is more than all the other multinational brands combined. The company has also embarked on an aggressive international expansion plan in Vietnam, Brunei, Hongkong, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia, USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The F&B company is building two new commissaries in Laguna Industrial Park as part of their nationwide food chain expansion. Effluent from the two new commissaries need to meet the discharge loading limit set by Laguna Industrial Park Centralised Wastewater Treatment Plant or a discharge levy will be imposed. In view of this challenge, the F&B company selected MBR technology to treat their wastewater in both facilities designed to meet Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) DAO-2016-08 Discharge Guidelines, thus resolving their wastewater discharge issues.

Solution

A local contractor won the competitive design build bids for both facilities, utilizing Supratec MicroClear® MBR technology. The treatment process consists of fat oil and grease (FOG) removal as a pre-treatment, followed by EQ tank, 2mm rotary fine screen, chemical coagulation for phosphorus removal, anoxic, aerobic and MBR.

Results

Supratec MicroClear® MBR has consistently met and surpassed DAO-2016-08 Discharge Guidelines after plant commissioning. Part of the MBR effluent is being reused for irrigation at the facilities. The end user is very happy and very much satisfied with the outcome of the project as not only the MBR technology helps to resolve their wastewater discharge issues; it also reduces their potable water usage by 20% as they reused the effluent for irrigation purpose.

Thailand F&B Selects Supratec MicroClear® MBR to Retrofit Its Existing Wastewater Treatment Plant and Increase Plant Capacity by 360% Within the Existing Treatment Plant Footprint

Challenge
A leading Thailand-based manufacturer of hot and cold sauces and a variety of other high-quality food products, needed to expand its existing wastewater treatment plant by 360% due to an increase in their production capacity. The plant has a very limited land space and hence is seeking for a wastewater treatment technology solution that can retrofit its existing wastewater treatment to increase the plant capacity from 100 m3/d to 360 m3/d with the following wastewater characteristics.

Solution
The Owner selected Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology upon the recommendation by its Consultant. They engaged Crown-Tech Engineering (Thailand) Co. Ltd for the upgrade project. The existing treatment system consists of a DAF and anaerobic reactor as a pre-treatment followed by aerobic polishing with SBR. The Contractor added a bigger capacity DAF, retained the existing anaerobic reactor, increased air capacity of the aerobic reactor, and converted the existing SBR with two Supratec MicroClear® MBR trains, all within the very limited plant footprint. Each Supratec MicroClear® MBR train is equipped with one MX384 module, designed to treat 120 m3/d, with an allowance for another identical train to be added in the future for treating the maximum flow of 360 m3/d.
Results
The retrofit solution allows the plant to increase treatment plant capacity by 360% and allow the production plant to expand, all within its very limited plant footprint. The MBR effluent (COD <30 mg/L, BOD<5 mg/L, TSS<2 mg/L, NH3-N<1 mg/L, and FOG<1 mg/L) consistently meets and exceeds the stringent effluent discharge regulation, allowing the plant to do direct discharge and reuse partial effluent for toilet flushing and floor cleaning.
